Yeah when I saw that the XC90 won I was like, I didn’t need an article to tell me that’s the best SUV this year.

Something about Volvo getting a huge injection of cash from the Chinese so they can be who they always wanted to be is so perfect. If only more companies had this. Companies like Lotus and Mazda that can obviously make awesome cars, but often lack the cash to do so.

SUV, yes. Car and Truck, no. I’d probably have stuck with the XC90, and done Miata - to demonstrate light and fun are still appealing, as is outward visibility - and the Titan (though arguably not handsome) because it’s not one of the “Big Three”, especially as the Colorado won last year; hell, give it to the Canyon for variety’s sake..

Exactly. I am so tired of everyone saying Volvo is Chinese nowadays. I argue quite the contrary, in fact, because Geely is giving them so much money they can make their cars more Swedish, moving away from the standard (albeit excellent) Focus platform that Ford forced them to use and being able to develop their own engines and technology. In a way, Mazda is somehow able to do that on their own, however, and I give them kudos for that. Sure, they would benefit from more money, but the new 3 and 6 are amazing, not to mention the CX-3 and CX-5, and they are on their way to make it by themselves. Lotus, unfortunately, is not being too well supported by Proton, and unless they can find some way to dig themselves out of their rut I don’t see them living for much longer. Shame, as Lotus has always been one of my favorite brands.

The Titan is unfathomably ugly such an oddball. It’s not really competitive in it’s class and seems terribly expensive ($61K is RAM 3500 with a Cummins 6.7). As for the Camaro, it’s a more usable car and will outsell the Miata by a huge margin. The Miata may be more cheap and cheerful, but the Camaro is now a world beating sports car.

No idea. I guess it was part of Volvo’s 60 year anniversary celebration. Rather catchy lyrics IMO...

It’s obviously what the Germans think of us, as all of them are Euro-spec. The German songwriter/composer also tried to fit every American euphemism but chose the wrong ones

I agree. It seems like Geely are happy enough for Volvo to keep being Volvo, though it certainly could have gone the other way. As it did with Ford like you said.

Mazda is doing fine nowadays, they’re making great cars. I’ve always felt like if they had the money they’d make a rotary. And now, things are going well, and we’ve seen the first production-like rotary concept since...the RX8 a decade ago? When companies find money, enthusiasts get presents :P

Poor Lotus. The world has been moving away from sports cars and towards SUVs for so long, their model makes less and less sense every year. I agree, if they can’t change things and find a way to be profitable, there’s not a lot of hope. Fuck Bahar, he helped dig their grave.

I can tell you first hand that Volvos are not Chinese. It says “Gothenburg Sweden” right on the delivery tag. Geely is literally just the sugar daddy in this deal.

Tell me about it. Went to the dealership, tried to get a deal and they laughed at me.....They’re selling like hotcakes.

The Camaro is massively improved, yes, but it also had a lot to overcome, yet still misses in the critical element of outward visibility (and the design isn’t very good either: It looks like a squashed version of the last model, but then stretched vertically on the lower half. I saw a meme where it’s accurately compared to the current Corolla, and the new Malibu isn’t far off that same mark). The contest is the overall Car of the year, not just Sports Car, and while this year’s contenders weren’t the most competitive, the Camaro winning doesn’t quite seem plausible.

Coupling the other GM win with it reeks of advertising or something going on behind the scenes. It’s like they wanted to write something along the lines of, “we liked it so much, we awarded it twice!”, especially to cover themselves after the severe backlash last year for not picking the F-150 (or anything else, really). I agree that the Titan is an oddball, but sometimes we need an oddball. It seems more improved over its predecessor than the Colorado over past year’s Colorado, or the Camaro over last year’s Camaro (though, obviously, it’s not the “Most Improved OTY awards).

They won’t be Chinese until a profit is generated and the profits go back to everyone’s most beloved social/environmental/IP most favored partner- is the new Volvo running in the black yet?

I know the sentiment. The good part though, the ones who are running their mouth about the Chinese part are most often painfully ignorant to anything Volvo. They dont matter.

Yeah, that’s very true. Still annoying though since they spread the rumor which then taints Volvo’s overall image...
